Teambuilding - Mixing Concrete by Hand

Our day started with getting to know the Corozal Department of Youth Services (DYS) volunteers that are joining us to help us this week with our projects at Chan Chen.  DYS is a tremendously successful Belizean program to engage youth in leadership development.

Kendall and Carl strike a pose.   They are our construction team leaders.  Who wouldn't do what they say!

Sunday was a full work day at Chan Chen.  Our first task was to finish prepping the site for the concrete slab for of the cantina and digging holes fort the the posts,

There's always time to play games with the children.  Lauren, Maggie, and Samantha are showing some of the children that hung out at the school a new game.

Most of our work is manual which means it's hard on the back and blisters the hands

Our first batch of hand mixed concrete

Mixing concrete is very physically challenging.
plus it takes a lot of working together

Check out our concrete mixing videos.  Pretty great work for our first effort.

Meet Beth Wright.  Beth is our Peacework coordinator and expert with all things shovel.  Peacework is our non profit partner which coordinates the trip for us.  They work with a variety of Universities and Corporations on issues of social equity and poverty reduction throughout the world.

In the afternoon, we moved concrete mixing operations to the existing cantina slab to protect everyone from the sun.  Maggie was heard saying "this is the best decision we've made"

Alberto is helping us out again this year.  Here he works with Carl to level the concrete slab

End of day 1

We clean up well.  We had a great dinner at Corozal Blues (a nice pizza place on the water)
