..... and the sweat begins

One important component of our spring break service trip is creating relationship.  Relationship with each other, with the teachers and children of Chan Chen Government school, and with the community.

The process begins with sweat.   There's magic in sweat.  Especially when it comes from working together on a school construction project.  Sweat bonds us as a team, shapes us as leaders, grows us as individuals.  It connects us to the culture, country, and community.

Our first full day in Corozal includes a trip to Chan Chen Government School in the nearby village of Chan Chen.  Student teams meet the Principal of the school, Carlos Itzab, and brief him on their plans to provide an easter camp focused on healthy lifestyles to Chan Chen children as well as the design & construction plans for a Cantina expansion project.

Our group had a couple of hours to get started on the project.  This year's project is ambitious.  Our scope is twice the size of last year with the same number of people.  Below are a few pictures of our start on the project.

Marking off and leveling the new Cantina area means lots of shoveling.
and digging
and moving dirt

and of course... sweating.
