Day 1 of Easter Camp & more mixing

The team ready to go to the first day of our Healthy Lifestyle camp.

Sadie getting help preparing name tags

Our healthy living  camp includes classes in Arts&Crafts, Literacy, Healthy Lifestyles, and Physical Education.  The photos above show Ethan and Samantha leading the first session of literacy.

Sadie is leading the Arts & Crafts class.  Drawing and bracelet making were part of the class.
The pictures above include, Cynthia, Maggie, Samantha and Dr. Breikreuz.  When our students are teaching classes, they are helping out in other classes.  Teamwork!

The physical education classes are being led by Amanda and Lauren.  They include volleyball, futbol, and learning the dance moves of electric slide... "everybody clap your hands".

Also in the morning, our construction leaders Carl and Kendall make a trip to our friend Adolfo at the lumber store and the hard to explain but interesting Cinty's hardware store to pick up supplies for the afternoon construction effort.

The children of Chan Chen are extraordinarily friendly.  It doesn't take long to build friendships that make us become part of the community and begin to change our lives.

After a fun morning working with the Chan Chen children in the Healthy Living camp it was back to the construction site and yep, you guessed it, more concrete mixing.  Prior to the concrete work, the team painted siding.  As the pictures demonstrate, we had cheerful volunteers from Chan Chen.  Paint made it to hands, feet, hair, and clothing.

A paintbrush taped to the end of a pole works for those hard to get spots

Painting production was amazing.  We proved that many little hands make light work.  We do have touch up painting as a task for tomorrow.

Our smallest helper

For snacks, we picked up 2 buckets (one shown above) of Belizean bananas for $6US.  We cut this little cutie off after 5 or 6 bananas.  These bananas come from plantations in the Stan Creek district of Belize.  It's in the middle of Belize, a couple hours south of Corozal.  Belize exports their bananas to the European Union.

Now back to the concrete:  It's amazing to watch our students learning curve from the very first batch of thick, lumpy concrete to their 7th and 8th batches of smooth, fluid concrete.  The production was greatly increased from day 1 to 2.  Carl and Kendall, our construction leads had the team pre-batching one mix while others were mixing.  Everyone one knew what was needed and the teamwork was fantastic!!

Here's the progress at the end of the day, posts and roof supports set, concrete floor in place.

This team rocks!
